INTERRUPTION

Greyson wasn’t expecting the knock at the door. And yet he was. Hunter. That included a knack for Human psychology that went deep and calm like an iceberg, ninety percent submerged.

He was in his quarters, just about packed up again. Rachel was next door.

Greyson tossed a coin in his head over who it would be as he moved there, glancing around once to make sure everything was ready to go. Green walls. Amateur daisies that brought warmth to the space.

He put a hand on the handle and pulled the door open.

For a Hunter, Greyson recognized a severe failure of his paranoia in that first instance as everything went into overdrive.

Male. Tall and burly, dressed in darkish clothing of no particular note. Mask on his face showing only eyes and a narrow slash of skin. Too dark to be Anglo. Not reddish enough to be Hispanic. Maybe Mediterranean?

The man had a pistol in his hand. Didn’t say anything. Just eyeballed Greyson, then shot him square in the chest.

Darkness.
